Microneedling Aftercare

Microneedling Aftercare

Congrats on your microneedling treatment! You've just kicked off your skin's natural repair process, and the next few days are all about protecting that fresh work so you get the best possible result.

Microneedling creates controlled microscopic channels in the skin that trigger a normal wound-healing response. The goal over the next several days is simple: protect the barrier, minimize irritation, and let your skin heal without piling on unnecessary products or inflammation.

About Microneedling

Your treatment was customized to your skin, treatment area, device settings, and medical history. These instructions are general guidance and do not replace the individualized instructions from your treating provider. If the instructions we gave you at your appointment differ from anything here, follow your provider's instructions or contact us for clarification.

If something doesn't look or feel right, please reach out — photos are often helpful.

What to Expect

  • Pink or red skin, similar to a mild-to-moderate sunburn
  • Warmth, tightness, tenderness, or mild swelling
  • Dryness or a rough, sandpaper-like texture over the next several days
  • Mild flaking or peeling as the skin recovers
  • Occasionally, pinpoint bruising or temporary swelling

Most visible redness improves substantially within the first few days, although everyone heals a little differently.

What To Do

First 24 Hours

  • Use only the post-procedure products your provider specifically approved.
  • Do not introduce serums, oils, actives, or makeup — freshly treated skin is more permeable and reactive.
  • Avoid direct sun. If your protocol keeps sunscreen off the skin for the first 24 hours, use a hat and shade instead.
  • Keep your hands off the treated skin as much as possible.

After 24 Hours

Once your provider has cleared you to resume skincare:

  • Cleanse gently with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser.
  • Use a simple hydrating, barrier-supporting moisturizer.
  • Resume broad-spectrum SPF 30+.
  • Makeup may generally be resumed after 24 hours if the skin is intact and comfortable.
  • Keep being extra careful with sun exposure.

A tip we love

If your skin feels itchy or extra irritated, a thin layer of plain hydrocortisone under your moisturizer can help — but check with us first if you're unsure, and don't use it for more than a few days.

What NOT To Do

For roughly 72 hours, avoid strenuous exercise, heavy sweating, saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs, and anything else that seriously heats or irritates the skin.

Hold retinoids, exfoliating acids, scrubs, benzoyl peroxide, and other potentially irritating actives until your skin is no longer red, tender, tight, flaking, or stinging with basic skincare. For many people that's a few days; more reactive skin may need longer.

Do not scrub, peel, pick, or intentionally remove flaking skin.

The Healing Timeline

Day 0–1

Pink/red, warm, tight, possibly mildly swollen.

Days 2–3

Redness usually improves. Skin may feel dry, rough, tight, or slightly itchy.

Days 3–7

Flaking or a sandpaper texture may show up and gradually resolves.

Following weeks

Collagen remodeling keeps going long after the surface looks healed. Results build gradually rather than overnight.

Here's the honest part: you just gently broke down your skin so it would rebuild stronger. Think of it like the gym — you don't get your dream results from one session. Microneedling is often most powerful as a series, which is exactly why we built the Skin Saver Club.

When to Call or Text Us

Please reach out if you develop increasing (rather than improving) pain, spreading redness or warmth, pus-like drainage, pronounced swelling, grouped blisters or cold sores, fever, or a reaction that seems to be worsening instead of settling.

Something doesn't look right? Contact us.

Increasing pain, blistering, open skin, spreading redness, drainage, fever, significant swelling, or a reaction that is getting worse rather than better should be evaluated. Photos are always welcome.
