Laser Hair Reduction Aftercare

Congrats on your laser hair-reduction treatment! Right after, it's common to see temporary redness and swelling around individual follicles — it can look like goosebumps or small mosquito bites, and it's just the follicles reacting.

About Laser Hair Reduction

Your treatment was customized to your skin, treatment area, device settings, and medical history. These instructions are general guidance and do not replace the individualized instructions from your treating provider. If the instructions we gave you at your appointment differ from anything here, follow your provider's instructions or contact us for clarification.

What to Expect

  • Redness
  • Mild swelling around follicles
  • Warmth or a mild sunburn sensation
  • Temporary tenderness or itching

These usually improve within several hours to a few days. The AAD notes redness, swelling, and discomfort are the most common side effects and generally last 1–3 days.

The Hair Will Shed — It Is Not "Growing Back"

Treated hair doesn't necessarily fall out right away. Over the next several days to weeks, treated hairs are gradually pushed out of the follicles and can temporarily look like new growth. That shedding is a good sign, not regrowth.

What To Do

  • Use a cool compress if needed.
  • Wash gently.
  • Use a fragrance-free moisturizer if the skin feels dry or irritated.
  • Wear loose clothing if friction bothers a body treatment area.
  • Use broad-spectrum SPF 30+ on exposed areas.

Once all redness and tenderness settle, gentle exfoliation can help the released hairs shed normally.

What NOT To Do

  • No waxing, tweezing, threading, sugaring, or epilating between sessions.
  • Shaving is okay once the skin feels comfortable.
  • Avoid tanning and direct sun throughout your treatment series.
  • Avoid aggressive scrubbing while the area is red or tender.
  • Avoid excessive heat and heavy sweating for the first day if they aggravate the area.

When to Contact Us

Call or text us for blistering, a burn-like reaction, increasing pain, open skin, signs of infection, a cold-sore outbreak in a susceptible area, or significant/persistent lightening or darkening of the skin.

Something doesn't look right? Contact us.

Increasing pain, blistering, open skin, spreading redness, drainage, fever, significant swelling, or a reaction that is getting worse rather than better should be evaluated. Photos are always welcome.

Common Questions

Why does the hair look like it's growing back after laser?

Treated hairs are gradually expelled from the follicles over days to weeks, which can look like new growth but is actually shedding. Gentle exfoliation once redness settles can help them release.

Can I shave between laser hair removal sessions?

Yes — shaving is fine once the skin feels comfortable. Avoid waxing, tweezing, threading, sugaring, or epilating between sessions, since those remove the follicle the laser needs to target.
